Dr. Srijana Joshi Rijal is an ecologist with more than fifteen years of experience designing and leading regional programmes on biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, climate resilience, and sustainable landscape management across the Hindu Kush Himalaya. Her work is focused on science and policy, translating field-based research into practical guidance for governments, development partners, and the communities who depend most directly on these landscapes. She holds a PhD in Plant Ecology from the University of Tübingen, Germany, where her research examined the risks posed by re-introducing invasive plant species, and an MSc in Botany from Tribhuvan University, Nepal. Over the course of her career at the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), she has grown from research and policy roles into ecosystem specialist position, shaping regional initiatives on rangelands, wetlands, invasive species management and transboundary landscape programme across HKH countries. Dr. Joshi led the development of a flagship regional assessment on rangelands and pastoralism in the Hindu Kush Himalaya. She has supported governments in shaping rangeland policy and strategy including Nepal's national provincial rangeland strategy and action plan and Bhutan's rangeland guidelines and has coordinated Ramsar site management planning. Her scholarly contributions include more than fifty peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, and technical reports published in journals such as Global Change Biology, Annals of Botany, Environmental Management, and PLOS ONE. She has also taken on significant editorial leadership, serving as editor of Global Plant Invasions (Springer), co-editor of Pastoralism: Research, Policy and Practice, and guest editor of Nomadic peoples for special issues on pastoral resilience, yak-based livelihoods, and high-altitude rangelands. Beyond her research and editorial work, Dr. Joshi has organized major international conferences and science-policy dialogues, mobilized funding and partnerships for regional programmes, and built collaborations with UN agencies, research institutions, Indigenous Peoples, and local communities throughout the region. She currently serves as a Coordinating Lead Author of Springs outlook, a member of the IYRP Biodiversity Working Group and IYRP gender working group and has previously held the role of IUCN Focal Point for ICIMOD.
